2022 Scholarship Winner (Spring 2022):

Melissa Lucas

My name is Melissa Lucas, I am 25 years old. I am going to the California State University of Los Angeles as a Graduate Student for my Master's in Public Administration. A mantra that I live by is to learn something new every day no matter what it is like art, history, science, or politics and whichever form like through experience, conversation, media, or scholarly because it only expands my horizons.

I come from poverty, immigration, and adversity. Despite these challenges I have arose it and become someone I am proud of. Through hard work, support, and dedication I have begun to emerge into my career. My career goal is to create and run a nonprofit that will help my local community. Since I was young I have always liked helping and I turned it into a passion. I have decided to pursue a nonprofit field to make my career out of and help my community because of my background. Growing up worrying about money, about my parents being taken away from me, and so much more have driven me to become an advocate through nonprofits. Currently, I am halfway through my program and I have learned so much more about what kind of nonprofit I would want, what are the current needs of our time, and how I can help ease them.

2021 Scholarship Winners (FALL 2021):

Michael Bailey

Hi! My name is Michael Bailey and I am a first-year student at Maryville College in Tennessee. I initially entered college as an Economics major, but soon became interested in Criminal Justice. However, I finally decided to pursue Biochemistry. I guess it is safe to say that I am interested in many disciplines. Since arriving on campus, I got involved with the Black Student Alliance, Student Conduct Board and I currently serve as the Vice President of the Global Citizenship Organisation (a club I was destined to join since I was born in Jamaica). I like many quotes but especially love Nelson Mandela´s Education is the most powerful weapon that one can use to change the world. Education is important to me because it gives me hope for a better future.

Chloe Alexandria Jackson

Chloe Alexandria Jackson is a native of Inglewood, CA and graduated from St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey, CA in the spring of 2021. At St. Bernard High School, Chloe was an actively involved Viking, earning several academic and athletic awards. She was a member of ASB, Yearbook Staff Photographer, Black Student Union, STEM Summit Leader, TAKS Leadership, Viking Ambassador; as well as, she served on the varsity volleyball team all four years, earning a spot on CIF Second Team. Chloe also earned her Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts of USA. Her Gold Award Project provided art therapy virtually for kids 8-14, living under the COVID -19 mandate in southern California. Her goal was to bring freedom of expression, creativity, love, and happiness to kids near and far. Being of service, is something she takes great pride in doing. Currently, Chloe is a freshman at Clark Atlanta University pursuing a degree in architect with emphasis in Visual/Graphic Arts. Upon graduation, she plans to work as a graphic/ interior designer.

Education is the single most important tool that I can acquire to change the world. I believe it’s my passport to “be an agent of change,” and create a better world for me and my peers. Furthering my education, will not only open up a window of opportunities but give me access to enhance my knowledge.

My mantra is: She believed she could so she did! “God is within her, she will not fail. God will help her at break of day.” Psalm 46:5
